In its efforts to do this, it seeks to close gaps in expertise, capabilities and technologies for sustainability assessment and circular technologies in industry and research.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"AbteilungECO2023-Kompetenzen\">Expertise<\/h2>\n<p>With its research in the field of sustainability assessment, the department <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"8ff137f4-6c88-4653-acd9-c87e437a8806\">creates<\/span> the <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"b4d7eb27-8656-4e5f-8dc9-a20be65be49e\">necessary<\/span> <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"d8866497-109e-4ebc-ae6f-f25a20b64e39\">conditions<\/span> <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"ec183d73-6069-421e-8ee7-698676862fa3\">for the targeted<\/span> development and improvement of sustainable solutions. Lightweight systems technologies are an important building block for achieving <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"6c35933a-6430-44d4-a49b-e7ce153555f0\">minimal emissions in future<\/span>, but quantifiable evaluation of their potential represents a major challenge due to the complex interaction between different disciplines. <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"bf376814-0b96-4279-99de-e2c31f1e6490\">Transparent, comprehensible and quantitative assessment<\/span> of sustainability is carried out through <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"f4e11b41-0358-4c5c-99c5-67ec3355f99e\">careful and<\/span> standardised modelling, the conscientious use of internal and external <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"9ee84a01-4754-4a85-81c3-de0094aa5cd1\">data sources and<\/span> the application of appropriate <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"a0de9d28-fa47-4b16-9270-ab3b43f9dcfb\">and adapted<\/span> metrics. This provides the basis for improving <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"a3525327-d5aa-45c0-ba9d-ae80b030f7e8\">the environmental footprint and eco-efficiency<\/span> of lightweight system construction in a targeted manner.<\/p>\n<p>In its research into circular technologies, the department is developing <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"23986ee7-17f3-4483-a6db-11ee398adf9a\">separation and<\/span> <span class=\"inline-comment-marker\" data-ref=\"eb8f2bc7-1bbe-444f-b112-be309e6b10db\">dismantling technologies alongside processes for recycling and reprocessing fibre composites.<\/span> Research in these areas offers a variety of options for transitioning from a linear approach to a value-preserving circular economy,
